Michal Grombiřík is a Czech cimbalom player who performs as an orchestral cimbalist, soloist and chamber musician. He regularly collaborates with symphony and chamber orchestras, opera houses and contemporary music ensembles in the Czech Republic and abroad – in the classic orchestral cimbalom parts by Kodály, Stravinsky, Bartók and Kurtág as well as in new works and premieres.
He has performed with orchestras such as the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava, the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, the Hradec Králové Philharmonic, the Prague State Opera, Opera Diversa, Ostravská banda, the Brno Contemporary Orchestra, the Prague Music Performance Orchestra, the Police Symphony Orchestra, the Orquestra Simfònica de Castelló (Spain) and many others, under conductors including Andrey Boreyko, Roland Dahinden, Joel Hána, Henri Aavik, Jiří Rožeň and others.
His orchestral repertoire ranges from Kodály’s Háry János Suite and Stravinsky’s Renard to works by Boulez, Kurtág and Schreker, and as a soloist he performs concertos for cimbalom and orchestra by Czech composers. He also focuses on contemporary music and premieres of new works, drawing on his research into extended cimbalom techniques.
